Juan, un niño de cinco años, encuentra un pequeño niño Jesús de yeso, mutilado, erosionado por el mar y arrastrado por las olas mientras juega en la orilla del puerto. Es entonces que uno de los pescadores que trabaja en el muelle asegura haber visto la silueta y los brillos de un niño que desapareció en la niebla y lo atribuye a la tercera aparición del Divino Niño del Milagro, celebración religiosa de la ciudad eucarística de Eten y de su puerto.
La noticia de la aparición se esparce rápidamente entre el pueblo. Los locales comienzan a creer que Juan es la encarnación de este niño milagroso por su parecido a la efigie hallada en la orilla. Los testimonios de milagros y visiones se acumulan. Carmen, viuda y madre de Juan, comienza a preocuparse por la creciente histeria colectiva en torno a su hijo. La situación se agrava cuando el alcalde del pueblo intenta traficar algunos terrenos en donde se encuentra una antigua iglesia en ruinas, a la vez símbolo de la fe y el abandono de Puerto Eten. El alcalde intenta demoler dos veces la histórica iglesia y construir un hotel cerca a la orilla del mar, asegurando que eso le traerá beneficios a todo el pueblo.
En medio del caos, una Tiktoker fanática utiliza la tecnología de aplicativos de face-swap y clonación de voz para difundir y evangelizar a sus seguidores, informando sobre lo que presuntamente acontece en el pueblo.
Es entonces que aparece Moisés, joven ferretero y fotógrafo aficionado. Al igual que Carmen, siempre se mantuvo al margen de las actividades religiosas del pueblo, lo que genera una complicidad no dicha entre ambos. Al contagiarse de dengue Carmen, Moisés cuida a Juan y lo fotografía, solo para encontrar en las fotografías posteriormente reveladas una inexplicable luz que emite el cuerpo de Juan en el celuloide.
En medio de la tensión entre los planes materiales del alcalde y las necesidades espirituales del pueblo, los rumores y las confrontaciones en torno a la aparición se convierten en verdades incuestionables. El cura del pueblo, viendo una oportunidad para revitalizar la fe y el turismo religioso intenta negociar con Carmen, lo que no resulta.
Tras un hecho inexplicable, que salva a la iglesia en ruinas de su completa desaparición, los fieles en protesta atribuyen el gran milagro a Juan, quien por pura casualidad pasaba junto a Moisés y Carmen cerca de las protestas. Esta relación intensifica la necesidad del pueblo de reclamar a Juan como el Divino Niño.
Carmen decide huir con Juan, ayudada por el hermano de su difunto esposo, uno de los tres borrachos que aparece constantemente manejando un auto. Mientras tanto, Eduardo, el chamán-pescador del pueblo, amigo de Carmen y Moisés, realiza un último ritual en el morro, buscando proteger a Carmen y a Juan.
Una suerte de realismo onírico, El niño sin milagro es un retrato y fábula de la fe y la desesperanza de un pueblo en donde lo cotidiano y lo divino se entrelazan en una danza de fe, supervivencia y resistencias.
Synopsis (ENG)
Juan, a five-year-old boy, finds a small plaster statue of baby Jesus, mutilated and eroded by the sea, washed ashore while he plays at the harbor. It is then that one of the fishermen working on the dock claims to have seen the silhouette and glimmers of a child disappearing into the fog, attributing it to the third apparition of the El Divino Niño del Milagro, a religious celebration of the Eucharistic city of Eten and its port.
The news of the apparition quickly spreads among the town. The locals begin to believe that Juan is the incarnation of this miraculous child due to his resemblance to the effigy found on the shore. Testimonies of miracles and visions accumulate. Carmen, a widow and Juan's mother, starts to worry about the growing collective hysteria surrounding her son. The situation worsens when the town's mayor tries to traffic land where an ancient church in ruins is located, a symbol of both faith and abandonment of Puerto Eten. The mayor attempts to demolish the historic church twice to build a hotel near the shore, claiming it will benefit the entire town.
Amid the chaos, a fanatical TikToker uses face-swap technology and voice cloning to spread the word and evangelize her followers, reporting on what is allegedly happening in the town.
It is then that Moses, a young hardware store owner and amateur photographer, appears. Like Carmen, he has always stayed away from the town’s religious activities, creating an unspoken complicity between them. When Carmen catches dengue fever, Moses takes care of Juan and photographs him, only to find in the later developed photographs an inexplicable light emanating from Juan's body on the film.
Amid the tension between the mayor's material plans and the spiritual needs of the town, rumors and confrontations about the apparition become unquestionable truths. The town's priest, seeing an opportunity to revitalize faith and religious tourism, tries to negotiate with Carmen, to no avail.
After an inexplicable event that saves the church in ruins from complete disappearance, the faithful in protest attribute the great miracle to Juan, who by pure chance was passing by with Moses and Carmen near the protests. This relationship intensifies the town's need to claim Juan as the Divine Child.
Carmen decides to flee with Juan, aided by her late husband's brother, one of the three drunks who constantly appears driving a car. Meanwhile, Eduardo, the town's fisherman-shaman and friend of Carmen and Moses, performs one last ritual on the hill, seeking to protect Carmen and Juan.
A sort of oneiric realism, El niño sin milagro is a portrait and fable of the faith and despair of a town where the everyday and the divine intertwine in a dance of faith, survival, and resistance.
